Post Script
Excerpts from a letter by Coach Narvaez to Ms. Wanner, SMM School Principal, dated 11/6/89.
"The 1989 Cross-Country season is over, finally over. I can now look back and reflect on all that has happened.
In mid-August, a group of about twenty SMM kids, from 5th through 8th grade, took a chance, a chance on a new sport, that was guaranteed to be difficult and very challenging. At the time, we did not even have the assurance that we would be joined by other schools. But we practiced anyway, attempting to condition our bodies for the stresses to come.
By September, we were joined by three other schools and we received the sponsorship of the CYO. A meet schedule was set up and the season was underway. Throughout the six-meet Fall season, both our girls and boys teams performed exceptionally well. In the CYO Championships .... our girls won their event, and our boys were edged out by a combination team from two schools. ..... In the New Castle Championships .... our kids won the most medals and Erin Radel of the 6th grade won the individual Girls Championship.
Yes, we are proud of our kids. We respect their dedication to hard work and the tremendous positive attitude they exhibited. But yet none of this would have come to pass were it not for the supportive environment offered by their parents, coaches, athletic association, their school, the CYO, and members of the community at large.
This first season was a success for all involved, but more importantly, it assured the continuation and growth of this sport in New Castle County. We can now look forward to an increased participation by ... many hundreds of grade school and junior high school kids in the near future."
